GSI will host a webinar on geotextile filters

The Geosynthetics Institute (GSI) will sponsor a webinar, “Geotextile Filters: Concerns and Issues,” on November 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. EST. Geosynthetics Association (GMA) member companies and their employees receive discounts on all GSI webinars and short course registrations.

It is roughly estimated that geotextiles have been used in more than 500,000 filtration applications to date. Malfunction is extremely rare, with only 82 published or known cases (~0.016%) in the GSI field problem database. Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge them in the context of “learning” so that they do not repeat themselves in the future.

The various anamnesis are divided into the following groups:

Design issues of geotextile filters

Problems with atypical soils

Issues related to atypical permeants

Problems with installing a geotextile filter

The webinar is illustrated with cross-sections of specific situations as well as significant photographs.

In summary and recommendations, current practice in the design of geotextile filters is considered to be very good for water as a permeant flowing through typical soils. In this regard, atypical permeants and unique soils require special attention.

Highly suspended soils and geo fabric biological contaminants are certainly of concern. Unique soil types such as non-cohesive fine sands and silts, dispersive clays and ochres should also be evaluated accordingly. For such situations, four different long-term laboratory balance tests are described and compared with each other. Finally, graded geotextile filters for unique situations are described and recommended.
